In the middle of the night, while waiting for a bus in a bus station, a lonely stranger called Mr. Smith sees a pregnant woman being chased by a man with a gun. He follows the couple, kills the man and helps the delivery of the baby in the middle of a shootout while a gang of hit-man tries to shoot them up. The woman is killed but Smith saves the baby, escaping from Hertz, the leader of the killers. Then he meets the prostitute Donna Quintano, who has just lost her baby, and asks her to breastfeed the newborn. They are chased by Hertz and Smith discovers the reason why the bad guy wants to kill the baby. Late at night, in an unnamed U.S. city, a solitary man sits at a bus stop. A pregnant woman runs by, pursued by a man with a gun. With reluctance, the man at the bus stop rescues her and assists with the baby's delivery, while additional pursuers fire at them, including the gang's particularly nasty leader, an intuitive man named Hertz. Our hero, known only as Smith, determines to save the child and find out why Hertz wants the baby dead. At a local bordello, he tries to employ a lactating hooker to watch the child, but things quickly escalate, and this makeshift family is soon on the run. Heavy metal music calms the baby. Why? A laboratory, gun factory, and presidential campaign all figure in Smith's quest for the child's safe deliverance. If you want to watch a comedy go and watch an actual comedy - this is more tongue in cheek than out and out comedy, the action scenes are poor in comparison to say the Bourne films or Die Hard 4.0, the over the top nature of the film doesn't work as well as say Crank, the comedy doesn't work as well as say 95% of comedy films, its just a mash up of nonsense aimed at teenagers who think just because its got a lot of shooting that it must be a great action film..<br/><br/>I was really looking forward to watching this, heard some good things about it (sadly mostly on here) but at the end I just wished I had watched Crank again as thats the film its closest to, and Crank is superior in every way (and that ain't gonna win no Oscars anytime soon - and not because of the writers strike either!) <br/><br/>Just an odd film that felt like I was watching someone play an arcade game on my TV, shame it wasn't a decent arcade game tho…… The movie's title is "Shoot 'Em Up!" And that's exactly what you get. Non-stop action. And non-stop shooting. Add a great performance by Paul Giammatti (in a rare, but deliciously despicable "bad guy" role as "Hertz") and Clive Owen as "Mr. Smith" playing the guy who'd prefer to just sit on a city bench, mind his own business, and eat his carrot–but is "forced" to intercede when he suspects an "injustice" is about to take place. If you like your flicks flavored "film noir," Owen plays out his "Mr. Smith" character a la Bruce Willis in his "Die Hard" and Tarantino roles. Smith single-handedly overcomes incessant firepower, approximately equal to that of the entire Allied force in Europe in WWII! And when I say "single-handedly," I mean "single-handedly"! In one scene, Owen (with one hand) serves as midwife in a successful childbirth, while simultaneously (this, with his other hand) whacking at least thirty (fifty?) "bad guys" intent on killing him, the pregnant woman–AND the newborn baby. And all this without suffering so much as a flesh wound! Terrific fun!<br/><br/>If you're hoping for an action movie with a Robert Ludlum-esquire (Bourne Trilogy) feel to it, characters who embody characteristics of real people you've known, or if you insist on a plot with even a limited basis in reality - skip this one. But for start-to-end action, a "noir-ish" feel to it, and a couple of good performances (and a *great* one by Giamatti), you just might get a kick out of "Shoot 'Em Up."<br/><br/>It's the kind of movie where you're sure you could slip out to grab a popcorn and catch back up to speed in no time. But, well, you just can't seem to leave! Anyway, I couldn't. Anyone looking for subtlety, character development or layered plotting will be disappointed, but action fans will find plenty to amuse them with this film that makes "Hard-Boiled" look restrained.
